Delta de l'Ebre
Ebre Delta is one of the most important ornithological destination in the Mediterranean and South of Europe.
Due to its strategic position, it has a special importance during the migratory periods of the birds, which, both in spring and in autumn, are using its ample humid zones to rest during their long trip.
More information
Ebre Delta covers 320 km², 20% out of which are natural areas, and 75% is cultivatable surface. The rest is urban area.
The area has approximately 50.000 inhabitants.
In wintertime, there are many species that choose the calm waters of the wetlands, specially Wading birds, thus turning Ebre Delta into the best destiny for ornithological visits from October until the end of March.
We cannot forget the resident species, with birds such as picampall (Emberiza schoeniclus whitherby), a not very common sub-specie, having its biggest world-wide breeding colony in Ebre Delta.
Moreover, it is necessary to mention some other species of relevance for the visitors from the north or centre of Europe, like the Ruiseņor Bord (Cetta cetti) or the Corsa Gull (larus audouinii).
As a plus to the ornithological interest, Ebre Delta delights its visitors with transformations of the landscape, that repeat year after year based on the season of the culture of the immense fields of rice. Everything begins with a crystalline image given by the reflection of the water surface that covers almost all Ebre Delta. This is because of the preparation of the countless fields of rice that are prepared during spring for the plantation of the rice. Shortly after, at the end of the summer the colour of Delta becomes gold-like thanks to the mature ears of the rice fields, until these take shelter, leaving to a landscape in a bucolic brown colour fruit of the wasteland fields that rest until the next season. Then, the process starts again.
